POSAVNI MUSEUM BREŽICE
Brežice
Exceptional history, a place of culture and art. Posavina Museum Brežice.
Perched on a hill on the left bank of the Sava River, which here marks the boundary between Štajerska and Kranjska, a castle was likely built in the 12th century by the people of Salzburg for administrative and defensive purposes.
A town grew around the castle, receiving city rights confirmed by a charter in 1353. The two-story castle that stands today, the most imposing building in Brežice, was constructed in the mid-16th century on the site of an earlier castle destroyed during the All-Slovenian Peasants’ Revolt of 1515.
In more peaceful times, the noble Attems family transformed the castle into a residence. The two-bay staircase, the chapel, and the Knights’ Hall are adorned with frescoes, with the Knights’ Hall — restored in 2011 — standing out as a unique example of Baroque secular wall painting in Slovenia. Today, visitors can enjoy concerts and other events here, while letting their imagination wander among scenes from Roman and Greek mythology.
Since 1949, the Posavje Museum in Brežice has been showcasing the rich heritage of the region, from its earliest days to the present. The archaeological collection reveals the story of prehistoric times. The exhibition Bürger – mestjan – burgher invites visitors into a 1900s salon, offering a glimpse of city life and the intimacy of a bourgeois bedroom.
The 20th century comes alive in the exhibition Under Nine Flags: Posavje 1900–1990. The art history section highlights both the secular and religious heritage of Posavje and features a gallery of works by Alenka Gerlovič.

In this last exhibition space, visitors can share their impressions and leave messages for all those who help bring the castle and museum to life.
Brežice Castle also serves as a venue for weddings in one of its most beautiful Baroque halls, as well as for concerts, cultural events, celebrations, workshops, and a variety of other activities.
