RAJHENBURG CASTLE
Brestanica
Extraordinary history, a place of culture and art.
Discover Rajhenburg.
Rajhenburg Castle is one of the most important monuments of mediaeval castle architecture in Slovenia.
It was built in the 12th century by the Archbishops of Salzburg, who entrusted it to the ministerials, known in history as the Rajhenburgs.
After their lineage died out, the new owners extended the building and gave it its present-day appearance.

In 1881, the entire estate was purchased by Trappist monks, who converted the castle into a monastery. In 1941, the German occupying authorities set up a camp there for the deportation of Slovenes.
After the war, it was nationalised and housed several penal institutions until 1966. Since the first exhibition on the exiles in 1968, it has been used for museum events and activities.
After a complete renovation between 2010 and 2012, the castle has been managed by the Krško Cultural Centre.
Permanent and temporary exhibitions are supplemented by a variety of accompanying activities such as guided tours, lectures, creative workshops, and the like; in summers, the castle becomes a
magnificent venue for concerts, theatre productions, and outdoor cinema.
The museum shop offers selected products from the region and Imperial Chocolate, and visitors are warmly invited to enjoy the castle restaurant with its fine cuisine and the sparkling wine cellar.
