Rising above the centuries-old forests of the Gorjanci Mountains and overlooking the vineyard-covered hills of Bizelj, Mokrice Castle stands proudly as a medieval landmark. Its legends and stories reflect turbulent historical events and important east–west routes dating back to Roman times, with peasant uprisings leaving their mark on the castle and its surroundings.

In more peaceful eras, the castle was known for the luxurious life of its lords. The first written record of Mokrice Castle dates to 1444, though a Roman fortress called Romula once occupied the same site, as noted on the 4th-century Tabula Peutingeriana map.

Beneath the fortress laid a Roman settlement of the same name, from which several artifacts have been excavated. The castle sits on a hill above the right bank of the Sava River, and its name refers to the once marshy, wet terrain surrounding it.

Legend has it that during the Turkish invasions, a crow flew or fell into the castle courtyard, succumbing to the invaders' shot, thus warning of the approaching danger. The castle owner is said to have therefore dedicated a place for it in the coat of arms.

Today, the Mokrice estate enchants visitors with its noble castle atmosphere, a more than 200-year-old English park, and one of Slovenia’s most beautiful 18-hole golf courses.
